Jessica was thankful to her husband for telling her Benson and Ellyce had both survived the games , as he put it, though she wasn’t sure there would ever be another moment in their lives when she fully trusted him again. She assumed that some things had not gone his way since Rupert had been in a foul mood for more than a week, but she appreciated Jim telling her about the outcome, nonetheless.

She couldn’t mark the moment in their relationship when he had changed, or when their relationship had become altered, but she did know the moment when her feelings for Donald T. Bowman had transformed. It wasn’t lost on her that typically when people are chained together or in close proximity, there isn’t another choice. But after being shackled to him for the past few weeks, she came to realize he wasn’t as hard-nosed as he led everyone to believe. Under the crusty facade of a rough and tough sheriff was a decent human being willing to put himself at risk in order to protect her, her kids, and a demon—and neither one of them had seen that coming.

Kasdaye had really grown on them. When they weren’t driving around town searching for missing people, the three of them were combing the tunnels under Ellyce’s house searching for signs of life and for the door leading to the Underground Hub. When they were alone in the tunnels, Kasdaye always made sure to remove their restraints and let them move around freely, which she knew he didn’t have to do. It may have been a small comfort, but it was one that she and Bowman appreciated immensely. It also made reading to him while he and Bowman checked the hallways easier.

Every day for the past several weeks, they would read a new chapter from Thomas’ book while searching the tunnels. Just as emergency personnel had done above ground, the three cordoned off the tunnels in grid search patterns and systematically went about checking all the doors and hallways. Kasdaye was convinced he would either find Sophia and the Underground Hub, or he would find the door to the world in which Benson and Ellyce had escaped. Either would have been an acceptable option for Bowman and Jessica, but he was also looking for a way out for him and Bailey.

It didn’t take much for Jessica to believe Benson and Ellyce would return home one day and that they’d come find her. But after reading Thomas’ book aloud to Bowman and Kasdaye, the thought that Kasdaye and Bailey would be free to flee into another world was a much harder sell.

She pondered what would happen to the two of them as she ate from the MRE she had split with Bowman. He was lamenting again over the fact Jenkins had pulled off an operation of this magnitude right under his nose and he had never even suspected him. The revelation made him wonder what kind of sheriff he really was, but then Kasdaye volleyed right back asking him to imagine how he felt.
